Why The Space Between Frames
This is a short intro to my creative space. I’ll share photos, reflections, and stories about photography and seeing.
Photography isn’t only about what’s inside the frame.
It’s about what surrounds it — the choices, the intention, the story implied but not spoken.
That’s the space I keep returning to — part of the process that’s often messy, sometimes uncertain, but always creative. It’s where ideas take shape, and sketches bring those ideas to life.
When I photograph, I’m aware of the spaces between:
Between light and shadow.
Between subject and storyteller.
Between past and present.
Between what’s captured and what’s felt.
Between this photograph and the next.
This space — The Space Between Frames — is where I’ll share some of that work.
But really, this space wouldn’t exist without a little nudge.
Well, okay, a big nudge. A gentle push.
My dear friend, Candie, walked with me through a long season where I wasn’t quite sure where my creative work was headed. She asked questions I didn’t yet have answers for — most often: “What’s next?” And while she keeps insisting I should write a book (which feels far beyond my league), this space feels like a perfect place to start. A place to share, to explore, and to invite others into the conversations I’ve been having with her — and with myself — for quite a while.
Here, you’ll find:
Visual essays (word-and-image-storytelling) and personal projects
Reflections on teaching and learning photography
Thoughts on story, composition, and seeing the world around me
The occasional behind-the-scenes look at how projects evolve
You won’t find camera specs or gear reviews here.
But if you're drawn to photographs that speak beyond sharpness and settings — you're in the right place.
Thanks for joining me!

Looking forward to more
Hi Denice ,I came here via James Maher's Glass City column. Your thoughts and motivations about sharing stories resonate and I look forward to reading your Substack and viewing the images.
Well done for setting this up...
Pete.
